Repair.

I built a spinning rod with a split grip a while ago and ran over the handle with my boat trailer. The reel was toast. The handle, in the split, was split lengthwise but didn't interfere with anything until I set the hook yesterday on a bass. I heard a crack and the handle is now soft and springy. I was thinking about wrapping the whole split section and finishing it. Is there a better way to repair my best worm rod? Thanks.

Wrapping it won't help anything. You will have to sleeve it internally to regain use of the rod.

You could cut the rod at the grip section by the reel seat and insert and glue a section of rod blank into the rod end, cut the section to length and add the rear grip knob. That should keep the weight change to a minimum.

If the blank section doesn't match the rod it can be painted or decorative wrapped if the additional weight is of no concern.

Good luck

John.

Thanks. The rod was a little tip heavy so I glued, JB Weld, a sleeve in it.

JB Weld? Not good. You need something that has a bit of give to it, and at less weight. Strength isn't the issue in these circumstances.

Actually, if the right JB weld was used, it is just fine.

Best wishes

Too late gentlemen. I needed to take up a few thousandths and the thick JB Weld worked fine.
