So my first build and my first post. Been reading for some time. I can’t seem to find my answer. I’m sure it’s the age…lol. I’m building a panfish rod for my son.
Question. I want to put a colored wc against the reel seat. It is a WCS from mud hole. I can’t find anything other than black. How to I find the similar to match the seat?
Seat = CRSD-16 CRS
WC = WCS-16 Fuji

I always glue my winding checks onto the blank, with the thinnest od epoxy coatings applied with a toothpick, so that it creates an invisible, water seal to prevent water getting under the grip' You maybe could get away with a silicone winding check not needing epoxy. All winding check installation instructions I've read, say that the WC should fit loosely to the grip, butting up against it, with the epoxy holding everything in place. Now, by loosely, it means - not snug, but with a touch of wiggle room. Make sure to measure the diameter of the blank where the winding check will sit, with a digital caliper, or micrometer so that you order the size closest to the blank, but just a hair larger.

I think I have this pictured right. You have a SK2 spin seat which you have split and want a check on the two inside ends, then you have a foregrip and a rear grip of some sort. I have yet to find any checks like the WCS other than black. Here is what I have done. I order a aluminum check that matches the O.D. of the reel seat. I am sure the I.D. will be bigger than you want. Then I wrap the area in front of the reel seat where the check will sit with black thread. Do as many layers as needed to get a snug fit. Glue the check on just enough epoxy to tack it in place.. I come back later with some rod finish dyed black and fill the void. The finish flows nice and is more flexible than epoxy, plenty strong for this application.

Another option I have not tried but is on my list of experiments I need to do. Get the WCS checks and remove the finish with fine sandpaper. Then paint them. I think those powdered paints for jig heads would work great. Dust them and then heat them. I know it would hold up great. I talked to DO it molds that makes the pro tec powder paints. They saw no reason as to why it would not work. Again have not tried it but a simple option that would not take much time or expense to try.

Green is hard to find in winding checks. Matagi does make colored winding checks (but not green) that fit size 16 reel seats, including the SK2.

Another option is to just paint the Fuji nylon WCS winding checks green.

In lieu of a store-bought winding check, create your own radiused filet by building up thread finish tinted with pigment of your color choice; zero gaps, seals against water intrusion, looks and feels very good.

Wow. More decisions! Thanks for all and any help. It’s slowly coming together. I like the idea of build up finish. I bought some high build finish and I’m gonna try that. What kind of dye? Working through this without a mentor is tougher than I thought. Lots of mistakes. The rods going to cost $1000. By the time I learn from my mistakes! Any guidance on the die? Thanks again all.

Just buy the winding check that has the right OD for your applivation and run some wrapping thread under the check to make up the difference in ID, it shouldn't take a lot, green ones are at Mudhole.

I use epoxy pigment left over from my composite days. I have heard that Testors hobby paint works if one lets the pigment settle and pour-off the “clear” on top. Others simply purchase “marbling pigment “ available from most rod building supply sources and is designed for use with thread finish epoxies.

It probably would go without being said, but by mixing pigments, one can achieve virtually ANY color. Just remember that a tiny bit of pigment goes a loooooooooooooooooong way!!!
