Hello again!
I have a rod with a .866 butt. I have a cork handle with an OD of 1 1/4''. If I hone out the handle will there be enough cork left on the handle to use it on rod? At what point do I just use EVA? I'm still pretty new at this so any info would be great! Thanks James Re: large butt rods

The cork is supported by the rod blank. If your fit is good, you don't need more than1/16th of an inch left on top of the rod blank to function just fine.
Keep in mind that cork tape is alway an option as well. .............. Re: large butt rods

10-4 on Mr. Kirkmans comment. For a blank like yours, I would go the way of cork tape.
Or, you could go with a slick butt if it would work for you. [alpsforecast.com] Re: large butt rods

Thanks for the quick replies. The rod is a super seeker SS-CLBF708 7' 15-25lb. I want custom grips so I was thinking cork with some cork rings mixed in.
I'm waiting on a 10' surf rod that I ordered to come in and I'm thinking about going with cork tape on that. Re: large butt rods

Angler's Workshop has a large diameter pre-made cork grip, 11 inches long I think, 1.3+ inches, you can cut the grip up and add what you want and turn it down to any shape you like. Re: large butt rods

I take rubberized cork down to about 3/16" to a 1/8" in thickness to give my fore grips on some rods a truly custom look. The rubberized cork is a much tougher and does not have the voids or flaws of natural cork. You can also go down fairly thin with burl rings. Re: large butt rods

James, will you have a gimbal on that rod? I would. If you use a separate arbor for the gimbal that could effectively move the end of your rear grip forward close to 3 inches and the blank would be smaller in diameter there. Take some care with your reaming and I think you will be fine.
I pretty much only use cork on really light rods these days (10# class and under) as good cork has gotten so expensive. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
