I’m new to this and have a quick question. Just built cork clamp made from threaded rod. I saw these on YouTube and they looked sweet. I’ll let you know how the work afterwards. My question is what to put in the rod to keep the glue from sticking? I’ve seen mention of paraffin and I’ve also seen light coating of vaceline. Which would you guys use on threaded rod? I’m using wood glue to glue the cork for my handles. Thanks for your input!

I rub an old birthday candle up and down on my solid mandrel to coat it (not threaded rod). I have not had any problems with the cork / glue wanting to stick to it.

I wrap the threads with teflon plumbing tape. But an old candle works also.

Try a wax toilet gasket, works for years

I don't like to put anything on the rod because I don't want any sort of lubricant on the inside of the cork when it comes time to glue it up.

I glue up the cork and when set, I remove the nuts and washers from the ends of the threaded rod and then put the threaded rod in a 1/2 inch variable speed drill and unscrew the threaded rod from the glued up cork.

After the threaded rod has been unscrewed, I put a thread die on the thrd threaded rod, and use the variable speed drill to run the die up and down the threaded rod until the threaded rod is free of any glue.

A very simple procedure and it works very well.

I also use threaded rod as a mandrel when I am doing my grip shaping. I do all of my cork reaming before I glue up my cork or shape the grip. I will put masking tape arbors on the threaded rod to center the rod in the reamed cork before shaping the grip.
Because I pre ream the cork, I can generally use at least use 3/8th or 1/2 inch threaded rod as an arbor to be stiff enough to avoid any issues when grip shaping. Since the rod is threaded it is easy to keep the grip secure on the threaded rod when shaping, and is easy to unscrew to remove it from the rod after grip shaping.

Never have any issues with anything sticking to the rod or any issue with wax or other lubricant contaminating the grip when it comes time to glue the grips in place on the finished rod.

I am an old surfer and use a surf wax called Sex Wax that I have used on my surfboards for over 40 years. It is little softer than normal wax. I usually have to ream the cork anyway so there is not a problem with epoxy sticking, at least I have had none.
