The "necessity" of filling cork

I've been reading this board for quite some time, and I've seen numerous threads regarding how to fill cork. I've tried some of the methods, and the results are OK, but I just don't like how filled cork looks. I much prefer to use the best grade cork I can, turn down my grip, then coat with U40 cork seal. I love how it looks without any fill.

Have any of you quit filling cork completely, especially you folks who sell numerous rods? Or, does your clientele demand the filled cork?

I have never filled cork on a rod I made. I do as you do and buy good cork to start with. However, I do have some high quality factory rods
and from time to time I find spots that need repairing to prevent major cork damage. Two used rods I bought have some filling that needs to be done. Also the dide got knocked off a Tennessee handel and needs work. When they are out of fix I put'em back in fix. But it is
not a good trade-off to buy poor quality cork and then spend time filling it. Having said that, if you want to see how it looks, go to a store that sells rods, even hifg dollar stuff. It's horrible. I just bought a $200 plus
rod (don't laugh) That is filled. But guess what, I hope they have to keep filling them Thats leaves the best cork for us. Ansd I still got cork I bought 10-12 years ago.

Just my 2c,

Bubba

Yo brother Andy,

How goes it! My perigee is almost finished its gonna be a great rod.

Im with You on the cork issue.

I try and buy top shelf or just 1grade below and then leave it alone with the exception of 2 coats of thinned acrylic varnish ( looks /feels just like Cork seal but I get large bottles at art supply stores locally for about $4.00.

The only time I fill anything now days is if its a deep enough pit to cause damage down the road.

Happy wraps "John"

I never fill,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,unless,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I have a huge chunk fly out of the handle during the turning process.

That has only happened once.

Me neither, not worth the effort. In fact, after you put the U40 on it, the holes kinda give it character. I have like Terry said, filled a big ole hole that was discovered after turning but thats about it.
