6' boat rod - spiral wrap questions

I'm going to build my first spiral wrap rod, a 6' boat rod. I plan on using a Penn Jigmaster reel on it. How far forward of the reel should the butt guide be? Should the 90 degree guide be on the same side as the handle or opposite? I plan on a size 12 butt guide with size 8 guides the rest of the way out. Does this sound reasonable? The rod will be used for summer flounder, mackerel, and bluefish. Can single foot guides be used or am I restricted to double foot guides for this type of rod?
Thanks for your assistance. I'm not OLD........I'm CHRONOLOGICALLY GIFTED Re: 6' boat rod - spiral wrap questions

I have built several spiral wrapped rods of different lengths,I have put the guides on both sides and do not think I see a difference in performance either way. As far as how far to put your first guide I have always test fitted and put it under load then adjusted to the least resistance for the line, Re: 6' boat rod - spiral wrap questions

The only preference for the 90 degree guide that I've seen is to put it on the same side as the handles so when placed on the deck of the boar it will face up and not into the deck. Since weight and sensitivity are not issues with this type rod I would think double foot guides would be preferred. Most guide manufacturers rate their two foot guides using line pound test as the rating factor. Re: 6' boat rod - spiral wrap questions

I suggest a larger butt guide, maybe a 20.
The extra height off the front grip when under load will come in handy. And putting the transition guide (not necessarily at 90) on the same side as the handle works well for storage, but you might like it better on the left side (assuming right hand retrieve) so you can ease the line over when retrieving if you have a stacking problem. Best bet is to mock it up and run line thru the guides, put it under load and see what you think. One foot guides at the 180 will work, but are not as sturdy as 2 foot from a handling point of view. And we never use them as transition, same reason. Thanks for that tip Mike Makes sense. Most of my builds have smaller guides so I never saw that as an issue, but it is a great tip Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
