I just applied a coat of Thread Master 2 part epoxy to my newly wrapped rod and large black spots are bleeding through. I used Bullard Thread Craftsman Twist Size A CT-GN/G, sealed it with 2 coats of Flex Coat Thread Sealer, let it dry overnight. The epoxy is still curing, but I am concerned about the black spots. I've never seen this before.

A photograph would be helpful. If the wraps are on a dark blank, it can likely be that the thread is not packed tightly enough, especially if it is a light colored thread.

I talked with some of the guys that use thread sealer all the time and they said that the best thing to do is to let it cure for at least 24 hours in a room that is at least 70 degrees. Many of the different manufacturers have different recommendations but to be safe they said to always wait 24 hours before putting on the thread finish.

If I had to wait 24 hours for CP to dry, I'd change my CP. If I had to have 70 degrees for it to dry I'd have to sell my house and move to Arizona. Take the tip from Bill, it's most likely packing.

Are you sure that you did not have an adventurous fly in the shop that thought he would leave some spots on your rod?

I have had similar problems-I think mine go back to using thread sealer that was too old.

When I've used FlexCoat CP I have had an occasional problem with it not sufficiently penetrating and coating the inside of the thread on guide foot or hook keeper tunnels. Then when epoxy is applied it soaks into the thread and causes dark blotches. Not sure that is what you mean by black spots.
Anyway, now I use only Chromaseal CP on regular nylon since it's thinner and soaks in much better and never gives me a problem. Some will thin their FC CP but I don't like to thin products.
I still use FlexCoat CP on decals, Madiera thread, and gluing down feathers since it seems to have much better adhesive properties and gives better results than Chromaseal for those applications.

Well I did a little experiment by wrapping a single guide. I tightened the tension on the thread, sealed it, left it 24+ hours, epoxied it and it still created black spots. I am thinking Dan Murphy's idea of old thread sealer might be what it is. So I will try another experiment using a new bottle of thread sealer. Thanks for the input.

Do another experiment.

Complete your thread wrap using NO thread sealer.

I generally only use sealer on wraps requested by the client. I prefer the translucent look that one gets with no sealer on the thread prior to epoxy coating.

Okay, here are the results from my latest test (experiment). I wrapped a double footed guide, one side with the Bullard Thread and the other with a Gudebrod . I sealed them both the same way. This morning when I applied the epoxy, the Bullard side has the black streaks/spots popping through and the Gudebrod side looks great. Not totally conclusive, but I think the Bullard thread is somehow defective. It is a green/gold metallic twist and I think the metallic portion is the offending culprit. I am ready to abandon the Bullard thread and get back to wrapping and finishing my rod with the Gudebrod. Thanks to everyone for your input.

I have had the same problem. I received some old stock Flexcoat CP from Cabela’s and had it screw up my build. I had a gift certificate for the store so I picked up some supplies there. I usually only pick supplies up from my buddy’s rod building supply shop. When I asked him about it and had him look at the rod, he said it was because of old CP and that was the reason he never uses Flexcoat CP. I never used that brand again after that. I just don’t want to take the chance of getting another old bottle of the stuff.

One last ditch effort to resolve the black spot issue. As suggested, I did not use any thread sealer. It turned black immediately. So the thread went into the trash. Thanks again for all the responses.

I had a similar problem, Tom. Except, mine was with using old Gudebrod thread sealer with Gudebrod blue and white tiger silk thread, and then Pro Kote finish. I have a new post on the board, but after reading your thread...I’m beginning to think it’s the freshness of the sealer and not enough coats. Check out my post as comments trickle in.

I couldn't leave it alone, so I tried something new. I applied 4 coats of sealer letting them dry completely before applying a new coat and I left the last coat dry for 24 hours. No black spots or bleeding. I have only had to do this extensive sealing on this particular thread Bullard Green/Gold Twist, so I think it is analogous to this individual thread. Anyway, thanks again everyone
