Good morning Gentlemen,
I have had a request for a 6' rod for throwing square bills and DT6's. I've not been able to come up with anything in that range but I am considering trimming down a 6'6" blank to get me to the length desired. Do you all have any suggestions or know of any 6' cranking blanks? Thanks, Tom Re: 6' blank for square bills

Bet you can find a MHX shooter blank that will work, I've used similar G Loomis CR series rods for that for years. Re: 6' blank for square bills

Spencer do you think that the fast action of the MHX's is too much for squarebills? I have several Castaways that I got from Lance a few years back that are just about the same spec wise as the MHX's but sort of set them aside as I was thinking they would be too fast and have trouble keeping fish buttoned up.
Thanks, Tom Re: 6' blank for square bills

I found that if I had the right power blank, the fast action wasn't an issue. Re: 6' blank for square bills

sounds good. I may toss one together just as a test stick to see how it handles it.

I was going to build a jerkbait rod on an MHX Shooter blank., specifically the CS723. The blank mentioned was far more powerful than I expected it to be, and the action was very fast. IMO, way too much power, and way too fast of an action. Perhaps the lighter powered blank in that series are vastly different. If not, I certainly wouldn't use one for squarebills. I ended up going with a different blank for the jerkbait rod.
I too wanted a 6' for making short accurate casts with squarebills to wood cover, but couldn't find a 6' cranking blank, so I went with a Rainshadow RX7 CB66MH, and trimmed 6" off the butt. Just my opinion here, but I happen to think it's perfect for its intended purpose. It casts Bomber Square A's, Jackall Aska SR's and KVD 1.5's extremely well. It handles KVD 2.5's and Lucky Craft BDS 3's nicely, and I even throw Jackall Girdrons with it. Although the Giron at 3/4 oz. is a little heavy as far as casting goes. Retrieving is no problem though. I've caught quite a few fish using it, and haven't lost one yet. Most every fish has been hooked on the belly hook as well. And a pleasant surprise is that it works quite well for buzzbaits in the 1/4 - 3/8 oz range. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/08/2016 07:58AM by David Baylor.
