Direct drive motor vs pulley wheel??

Hello,

Just wondering what the benefit of having a pulley attached to the motor to drive the chuck head is for? I have my motor, coupler, then chuck head to turn the rod. No pulley on my set up. So is the pulley system smoother, more efficient?

Thanks,

Ricardo

You can change rpms for different kinds of jobs and materials with pulleys, it also increases startup and working torque at slower speeds.

Ricardo,
I think that one of the biggest advantages to using a pulley and belt drive system for a power wrapper is that you can get a nice robust accurate chuck with essentially 0 runout mounted on the end of a good solid ball bearing supported shaft.

Then, the headstock chuck and bearings are now immune to wear and tear on the motor and its bearings and you also have the ability to use a standard sided machinest chuck for your rod wrapper for overall better grip holding and more accuracy with less wobble.

Thanks for the replies guys. After sleeping on it I realized the benefits, mainly the more true running the spindle will be with less run out.
