Bamboo rod wrap finishing

...applied two light coats of ProKote finish to the wraps on a bamboo fly rod project. The blank was pre-varnished, so all I really need to do is finish the guide wraps. I'm wondering if further light coats of ProKote will eventually be a losing battle when trying to avoid round-looking, finished wraps - I'm hoping for a finish that somewhat follows the contours of the flats and edges of the hex. So far, the flats are looking good, but the edges need help. I just wondered if I using something thinner, such as PermaGloss over the ProKote (when cured) might cover the edges without further heavy buildup.

Thanks for any and all help - greatly appreciated!
Mike

Don't start putting one finish over another. You're just going to create a mess.

Yes, more epoxy will build more depth. At this point you'll just have to decide where you need to stop.

Mike

What you are attempting to achieve is more easily done with thinned spar varnish - not epoxy - where the first and final varnish application(s) are frequently done by dipping the rod into a tube filled with varnish then slowly extracted. It's a different world than epoxy. Where two to maybe three thin applications of lite or medium viscosity epoxy almost always provides sufficient finish coverage and depth, five to seven total coats on the wraps is not uncommon for a varnished bamboo rod. The point is there are limitations to what can realistically be done with the viscosity of epoxy.

If you can still feel the thread on the flat corners I vote for a third coat of ProKote. It will most probably not be the look you desire, but the rod will nonetheless be attractive and sound.

Thanks Tom and Donald, appreciated.

I'll probably add one more light coat and be done, thought of going the spar route but too late now...next time, live and learn.
