Size 20 Y Frame Spinning Guide Set-Up

On bass / walleye type spinning rods, have you guys used any set ups with a size 20 Y frame butt guide? Trying to stay away from too high of frames and still get good performance. Would be looking at Pfleuger size 30 spinning reels and braid or mono to 8#.

Thanks - Marc

From Rich Forhan's article Rod Maker magazine, Vol.5, Issue 3.

7 foot rod, measured from tip:
5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 9, 10 inches.
6J, 6J, 6J, 8L, 10J, 12J, 20J. The #6 guides are fly guides.

6 1/2 ft.
5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8.
Same as guides above.

6 Ft.
5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8.
6J, 6J, 8L, 10J, 12J, 20J.

There's room to mess with these a bit to fit your needs.

Do they still make the 20J guide? Wondering what height it is.

Thanks - Marc

Marc,
the setups that I have using the 20Y's are 20,10,5 and whatever size micro out to the tip that you find appropriate. I typically use 3's, 2.5's or 2.0's.

Thanks Tom,

Does that setup work with mid-size spinning reels for you - like a 2500 Shimano or 30 Pfleuger?

I generally use a 2000 or 2500 and have not tried a 30 Pfleuger. I will say that I wont go any heavier than 8lb copoly with that setup. I generally use that setup for my rods that I will use 6lb mono or copoly with. I have used braid up to 20lb on those rods with great success but obviously braid is a different animal as you know.

I use the Alps Y20's all the time for my builds and never have an issue with them.
