Thanks all, for the good information, been quite an interesting learning process for this non fly fisherman.

I have discussed all of the above information with my customer. And as we all know it is what they like and want but given the input from everyone he has decided in a 6 wgt, thinking a mod. tip?

A fly fisher who wants a slow, parabolic-bend fly rod has a large number of very inexpensive blanks to choose from.

Phil You think the Rainforest ll is a descent choice? He won't be using it all that much either.

Tom: I would hesitate to recommend a rod blank until I knew the distance/wind the customer anticipated while fishing, or better yet, watched him or her cast. That said, I understand the Rainforest II is a good general purpose, average caster blank.

As others have mentioned, a 5 weight is the standard which can handle a small range outside of what's written on the blank. but i think a 5 weight is the "standard" if someone wants only one rod. if the guy really takes to fly fishing, he's going to want to explore catching several species in various situations.

i use a moderate-fast 9' 6 weight for trout in rivers and sink tip lines for lake, and it'll handle some wind nicely in the sierra, plus bushy flies and two fly rigs including streamers.

Run this by him. consider building an arsenal for the future. go with a 9 foot 6 weight now, then 9 foot 8weight later, then possibly an 8 foot 4 weight for smaller streams or ponds and small flies. if he fishes for bass, why wouldn't he be interested in fly fishing for bass as well? the 8 weight would do that nicely. just an idea...
