I am tearing down an old ugly stik I had laying around so I can change the eyes and practice wrapping a little bit. I was hoping to remove the old grips while I was at it and just try to start over with this rod. I tried a quick search on here for removing old grips but found nothing. If someone could help me, it would be very helpful. Thank you Re: Removing old grips

Cork grip? I grab with a set of pliers with teeth around the grip {don't squeeze down to hard}, Rock it back a forth and around, The cork will crumble off from the teeth on the pliers , work on small sections at a time, Once the bulk is off pick and scrape off what's left It worked for me. I try to stay away from knifes for my own safety. Jaa Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/15/2016 10:07PM by Jay Dubay. Re: Removing old grips

If you have a lathe, turing down a cork grip can be down extremely quickly.
If you're working against EVA or Hypalon, wear gloves and use a heavier piece of Spectra or Spiderwire type fishing line to spokeshave the grip off down to the blank. .............. Re: Removing old grips

In addition to Jay's comment is the use of heat, after you have ripped off the bulk of the cork from the blank.
The heat will soften the adhesive and make scraping the epoxy residue much easier and much quicker. Be safe Re: Removing old grips

For cutting cork grips from fly rods I I use a bonsai tool called a knob cutter. Google "knob cutter" and "bonsai" to locate one. They're sharp, so caution when approaching the blank is necessary. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
