Making some up locking fly grips. 2 parts ! how wide should the insert hole be? 2 How deep? I hope many of the reel seats are close in size. I realize that the down locking seat the end can be flat. Thanks for any help. Bill

I think there's a bit of variety from seat to seat.

Really depends on the manufacturer and the model #. If it is for a Lemke seat, I have all the specs

I don't guess I understand what the reels have to do with the inlet depth and ID

I should have stated that these will be at my booth at the ICRBE. Custom Fish Grips-split grips airbrushed and epoxied. I thought that a couple of fly handles might be of interest. By the responses I think I will make full wells in down locking. Probably with a rainbow trout theme. This piece should weigh 1 1/2 oz. Thanks again

Bill

The grip inlet diameter and depth for unlocking fly reel seats vary reel seat model to model. Inlet diameter is critical. Depth can be a wee teeny bit too deep an be OK.

Your choices are: (1) measure the seat or seats you intend to use and inlet as needed, or (2) buy the correctly sized, pre-inlet rings some reel seat manufacturers and retailers offer.

As you intend to make grips in advance and perhaps do not know the correct inlet diameters, you can build up the grips then wait until the reel seats are in-hand to inlet. Just remember to inlet the grips before reaming the grips to fit the blank.

I suspect one or more of this sites' sponsors sell a cork inletting tool that will inlet multiple diameters.

Most of the lighter reel seats are 13/15" or 20mm, the larger ones often are 7/8". I build custom fly rod grips and recess mine to 13/15" and then use a Dremel small sanding drum if I need to enlarge one.

Not sure you will find a market for a Full Wells downlocking, for two reasons: 1.) downlocking reel seats are not as popular and 2.) Those that do use downlocking are usually on lighter rods, where Full wells are less popular.
