Rail Rod fore grip material??

What kind of materials are you using for rail rods?

I recently watched a You Tube video of a fight w a large tuna and the fore grip looked like a finished piece of antler. Sounds weird but I've seen finished antler and this grip had the same characteristics.

Also, are there any good articles on the build of a rail rod?

TIA,

D Lloyd

rail rods are not normally built purely for lowest weight.
I have seen sacrificial fiberglass added below the blank kind of like a gun stock somplete with a step to keep the rod shipboard side of the rail.
It weighed lots though but was OK in party boat scenario.
I use red or aromatic eastern cedar.
depends what i have in stock.
Looks good, cheap, sort of ok durability wise, easy to work, can be shaped with common tools.
Soldering iron and you can burn designs/names in it, lots of reasons to use it.
You can also play around with a small branding iron with the boats name if you are building 50 or so for a party boat.
Finish with what works for you, urethane, yacht varnish etc.

I like the old standby.... Hypalon foregrip about 14 to 18 inches in length and a protective coat of 3M cold shrink added on top of the hypalon. You are right, it is not built light weight.

Maybe a smooth butt filled with seat arbors trimmed if wanted would be a harder material

You could use parachute cord. This makes an attractive, but very tough grip.

Be safe

Roger , would you put any kind of a finish on the cord? If so, what would you use?
