When we were in Yellowstone park in the winter time taking a Bombardier tour, the guide used an interesting method to defog the windows.

By each side of the coach, he had a squirt bottle of anti freeze. He instructed us, that when the windows frosted up, just use the squeeze bottle to put a layer of antifreeze on the window and let it run down without touching it.
It worked great to keep the windows frost free with 15 folks in the machine with no heat on the windows.

So, an easy way to keep your guides free of ice, is just to keep a squeeze bottle of anti freeze and squeeze them on the guides when they start to ice up. Instant ice melt for quite a while before you have to do it again.

The most commonly used de-icing chemical is Ethylene Glycol, which is classified as highly toxic to humans if ingested or inhaled: a cheap drunk followed by kidney failure and death. EG is not readily absorbed through the skin, is not particularly toxic to aquatic organisms, and is biodegradable.

As has been said, use size 8 guides and it doesn't hurt to use a little of Stanley's Ice Off Paste to keep them ice free longer.

Before dumping chemicals on I would put a piece of your line in it to make sure the chemical
will not cause problems. Hate to lose a good fish because I caused chemical reaction with the line.

Well we use Dyna-tek on our rods and they seem to not ice up at all. Might want to call in and try some?
