I know I can fairly easily take the guides off with a razor blade, but what about the reel seat? The real seat is the MVT Toray casting seat from Batson so I definitely want to get it off. Re: Well, It Happened. Custom Rod Exploded on Hookset. Help With Salvage

Try submerging in Boiling water, were gloves to twist and remove, The heat should soften the epoxy. Just curios what blank?? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/05/2015 04:43PM by Jay Dubay. Re: Well, It Happened. Custom Rod Exploded on Hookset. Help With Salvage

Since the blank is toast you have at least two options. One is to boil the part as Jay mentions, or you can cut the blank short and then either ream or bore it out. I'd go the boiling route first.

Andrew,
I am guessing that you have about a 10% chance of recovering your reel seat to have it to use again, and still look like a new reel seat. But, at the $15-$35 price for these seats it does make sense to at least try to recover the seat. But, if you try and fail - don't beat yourself up. Pick up another one and move on. Be safe p.s. I just went through a similar situation and I used the boring out technique that Tom suggested. It worked, but then the rest of the grips and handles had gotten so large due to the recovery operation, that I ended up not using any of the old parts. By the way, to recover the guides, just use an alchol lamp to heat up the guide wraps, especially on the foot side of the guides. Then, use a razor knife to cut the thread, cutting on the foot side of the wraps. Then, with a bit more heat to continue to soften the rest of the wraps, the wraps will simply come off in a chunk. Clean up the guides and reuse them as you need them. Re: Well, It Happened. Custom Rod Exploded on Hookset. Help With Salvage

I've done a couple in boiling water. It took at least half an hour to soften the rod bond enough to move the reel seat and even then it took a lot of effort. I used a metal milking pail on a propane fish fryer burner. _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. I have removed several reel seats using the boiling water method. It always works for me. You can salvage the grips but the seat and guides should be easy.
I use tape bushings so it is possible that other materials make the more difficult. I loan out rods all the time plus 3 kids so unfortunately I have a couple of breaks a year! Quinn Re: Well, It Happened. Custom Rod Exploded on Hookset. Help With Salvage

Geoff,
I agree on the wonderful blanks in the Eternity line. I have built a lot of rods on these blanks and everyone has been very happy with the rods built on these blanks. Take care Re: Well, It Happened. Custom Rod Exploded on Hookset. Help With Salvage
