EVA Butts and Rod Chucks
Posted by: Marc Morrone (---.dsl.airstreamcomm.net)

When chucking on an EVA butt with a 3 Jaw rod chuck or dryer you get 3 dents. Any tips for avoiding this or getting them to pop out quickly?

Thanks - Marc

Keep it simple - that's all I can handle!

Take the cylinder that toilet paper comes reeled on; cut a couple of round segments; slit the segments; wrap around the eva; now take some tape and tape the cylinders to the eva. That should work.

Try cutting strips of inner tube or equivalent and wrapping it around the butt. You could wrap it with multiple layers of tape if you protect the butt from the tape 's mastic. Lastly you could place an eva "sleeve" over the butt and clamp on the sleeve. The idea is to place something between the chuck jaws and the butt to minimize direct clamping pressure yet offer enough resistance to keep the but from slipping when under torque..

To remove existing dents you may try soaking the grip in hot water removing it and gently massaging the area.

I usually take one of the 4x6 poly bags you get your components in from the suppliers and wrap/fold enclose the butt with it being held on with a ring of masking tape. This creates a decent buffer to prevent the dreaded foam valleys.

Can't you grab ahold of the butt cap or is this a rod with a EVA cap?

I bought the inexpensive crb drier chuck and clamp it into my 3 jaw. When I do a rod with a pre-installed eva butt cap I simply slide it into the rubber chuck.

Next time don't put any butt ends or caps on the rod till it is complete This way you can add a piece of scrap ( if necessary ) for the chuck to hold and not hold the eva
