Hey guys. Another question. I m rebuilding StCroix Avid 13 ft float rod to spiral wrap to be used with low profile baitcaster. Rod was my own salmon/steelhead rod for years, rebuilt from factory rod. I had new handle with wood inserts and new cork, and centerpin setup on it. Now decided to try something different, i.e. Baitcaster reel and spiral. All been stripped and refinished, but when i ran static test i got this question. How many guides is too many? I am using fuji micros 3 mm for runners and new o-ring fuji for stripper and transition from spiral. After static test it looks like i need 14-15 running microguides. Plus 1 stripper and 3 transition. Plus micto top. Is that ok or should i adjust to decrease the number of runners? Rod is for my own use, so i am open for any experiments. If not like will redo again, not big deal. Just would be good to know

As the question would be, as you said, "good to know", I suggest building it with how ever many guides YOU think it should have. Then re-visit the guide train with changes and see if you gain or loose anything. question answered, knowledge gained.

One thing we discovered while building some very special light (2# test) line world record seeking rods
is that several more guides helped the line transition as the noodle rod bent under constant pressure.
it seemed to help keep the line from breaking prematurely.
We did it turnover, the "flip" done in 3 guides, conventional level wind reel.
The stripper was a size 20 to help keep the line off the operator's hand.

The tip of the rod shouldn't need anymore guides at the tip than it did in the centerpin configuration, spiral to the bottom and your done.

I had 14 high frame guides on it, no tip top, runners size 8 (for winter fishing). Will try to put new guides with same spacing and see. But most likely like it has been suggested will go ahead with many guides as originally planned. I guess i would get first hand experience and if it s not good redo it back to original.
