proper distance for ferrule wraps is twice the diameter of the blank correct? I keep getting confused if it is diameter or circumference. Circumference looks WAY to much.... Re: ferrule wraps - twice the diameter of the blank?????

Buzz,
That "formula" comes from something I put in the book I did for Amato over a decade ago. Ferrule reinforcement wraps don't need to be very long, as all you're trying to do is prevent a "split-out" which can only start at the ferrule edge. Therefore the wrap needs to be close to the edge of the ferrule, say within a couple mm, a single mm is even better. For consistency of appearance, I coined the idea of using the diameter of the rod at the female ferrule opening, and making the wrap a length equal to twice the diameter. You could possible get by with even less, but this is what I cooked up. I would stop short of saying that this formula is either correct or incorrect, and simply say it has proven to be more than adequate. ................ Thanks Tom,
I normally use that same formula but I am doing a 12 foot surf rod/musky rod for one pound baits and the usual formula looks really large on this blank, but it is also a really thick blank compared to most freshwater applications. Thanks for the feedback, Buzz Re: ferrule wraps - twice the diameter of the blank?????

Buzz,
I normally use 4-6 wraps in front of the guides when wrapping guides. I generally use 3/8th to 1/2 inch when wrapping joints. I just like the way that it looks. Good luck Re: ferrule wraps - twice the diameter of the blank?????

if it works for you good but I like 2 X DIA. of the ferrule , have never had a problem on all the ferrule's I have wraped ,
because I want to be safe I don't want to do it again, if it is a light rod go less wraps but on heavy one's be safe William Sidney AK Re: ferrule wraps - twice the diameter of the blank?????

Or, wrap the ferrule in a thread color that will blend in to the blank color when finish is applied, making it almost invisible.
The guide wraps would be in whatever color is the main theme. Best wishes, Ron Schneider Schneider's Rod Shop Mountain Home, Arkansas [www.schneidersrods.com] mtnron40@yahoo.com 870-424-3381 Re: ferrule wraps - twice the diameter of the blank?????

you people are doing it all wrong!!!! it's 1.5x the diameter!!!
(joking) PS, joking about doing it wrong. i really do use 1.5x on my trout fly rods. which is what i decided upon a few years ago i think, others do the same. it's an equal mix of the minimum + what looks aesthetically pleasing to my eye. in this case form equals function. eric fresno, ca.
