I have always used a tiny drop or two of epoxy or similar to keep the winding check in place. Another builder recommended not gluing them in place to allow for expansion/contraction. Also any difference if using NS, aluminum or rubber? I primarily build fly rods with some spey and switch rods thrown in. Re: Winding Check

You glue your grips and seat on so I wouldn't worry too much about expansion and contraction. We'd be talking fractions of a millimeter and under pretty wide temperature extremes. Assuming you put a trim wrap in front of the check, it probably doesn't matter one way or the other, but if you just need to keep it in place while making your wrap then go right ahead. You haven't experienced any problems to date, have you?

Steve,
When I glue on the grip, I also glue the winding check in place at the same time. Take care Re: Winding Check

use little epoxy an thread works great , the thread will cover any gap you might have between the check an blank , I don't like the plastic
checks they split after over time I think William Sidney AK Re: Winding Check

I do like Roger does and have not experienced any problems. Yes I do wrap in front of the winding check so at that point it is not going anywhere either way. I could see more issues with a rubber winding check which I only use on really inexpensive blanks. The advise came from some one who seems to think he is the for most authority on rod building.
