I have a casting rod that I built for myself years ago. It includes a snake skin inlay and Diamondite finish. Although the finish has done well, it has never matched the luster of an epoxy finish, such as flexcoat. Now that I have solved some of my finishing woes, I was wondering if coating over the top of the Diamondite with Flexcoat would brighten up the finish, or would it look like a glossy finish encapsulating a dull finish? After searching through the archives, I don't think there will be a chemical issue, but I wanted to bounce the idea off of you all first, as it may be more wise to leave well enough alone.

If you wet the current finish, does it brighten up? If so, a thin coat of epoxy should do the same thing.

Diamondite was a different type of finish. Have you tried polishing it?

diamondite was a great product when it first came out. the formula was then changed and it was no longer clear. it looks like it has flatteners in it and throughout not just on the surface.

I think I bought it in it's later days. It isn't cloudy, just flat. Tom, I haven't tried polishing. How would I go about that?

Micro Mesh sandpaper, or some type of car paint polish (not wax). Some toothpastes make fine polishes. Original Crest was once a favorite for lapping in reel gear systems.
