SiC vs. Zirconia toughness

Are Zirc rings much less prone to chipping or cracking than SiC? Looking at tip tops more than anything.

Thanks - Marc

Zirc rings might not be as "hard" but are less brittle than SiC in every environment.

Thanks - I am looking for maximum impact resistance, and not worried about hardness.

Well for the hundreds of thousands of guides we sell a year and get less than .0001% back total, I think we have great odds! Also BASS ELITES PRO KEVIN VAN DAMN has stated in all his fishing with the ALPS guides, he has never had a ring pop out. So that has to count for something :)

Unless you are using braided lines in sandy or muddy water and fish 24 hours a week casting constantly there is little need to fret over the harness of ring guides.

Actually - not concerned over hardness at all. The most basic ceramics are hard enough for me. What I'm really looking at is toughness - impact resistance.

Marc,
If you are looking at toughness or impact resistance, it is pretty tough to beat a pac bay minima guide with no ceramic ring, or one of the Recoil guides that only use a titanium wire with no ceramic ring.

No ring, nothing to break or shatter.

Lots and lots of these guides on rods of all types and no generally reported issues with the guides over lots of use.

Look at a lot of the bigger boat guides. Again, no ring and no issues.

Good luck

I actually use almost all Minima guides - but I still like a ceramic tip top. It just seemed like with mono I got more line wear with the Minima tip.

Any thoughts on this?

Was that tip a 3 - or a 4 There is a difference
The 4s are what is called swaged on both sides of the ring The 3s are not and give a edge on one side that tend to fray line You can use a ringed guide for the tip
