Lumiseal and its properties

Over the years, I have used Perma-Gloss on various rod building projects and found it to be easy to use. After each use, I keep it in the fridge, and that gives it more shelf life. I decided to try Lumiseal for my next projects. The first bottle I got had a thick gel layer which could not be penetrated. The second bottle had the same thick gel layer inside and the liquid beneath that was heavy and viscous. This does not seem to be useful to use on the rod. Being urethane, I realize what it should be like to use. Has anyone had this experience with Lumiseal, and I am guessing that it cannot be thinned out,(something I don't like to do). Thanks for any help.
Sanford

I have just had the same thing happen with my last 2 bottles as well…..
Granted one sat on my shelf for close to a year but was still sealed, the other I bought a couple months ago simply because I had concerns that the old bottle might be dried up?
After breaking thru a hardened thick skin I found both bottles had thickened to the point it was unusable, one had actually jellied so perhaps it had been frozen like Billy mentioned?
I contacted Rod Dancer and they told me I could thin it with zylene but that was unsuccessful with the jellied bottle, I had wasted the other bottle by this point so I am unsure if it would have worked on the older thicker one?
Disappointing as I only have one supplier locally and seems his inventory is all no good.
Guess I am going to have to find someone that will ship some fresh stock to Canada?

Would also like to add that these age sensitive products should have a best before date on them so the consumer dosent end up with substandard product.
If I had not previously used a good bottle of Lumiseal I wound never buy another.

The problem with moisture curing urethanes isn't the age as much as it is whether or not moisture can get to the product. There have been new bottles of such urethanes shipped and fully set even though they were barely a week old. Others have bottles that are 5 year sold and they're still fine.

Packaging has always been the issue with these products and it's not an easy fix. Most manufacturers will replace new bottles where the product has gelled or hardened even before being opened.

I found it very odd that the Lumiseal bottles did not keep the moisture out as they have a rubbery/plastic barrier seal under the cap that needs to be removed but perhaps that seal was compromised on my bottles?

Tom, with regards to mfgs aiding with bad product you are correct, in all my years I have found exemplary service from most companies, this really sets them apart.
I was very surprised and disappointed in the response I got from roddancer not offering up at least an exchange on one of the bottles?

I finished one rod with Lumiseal and re-sealed the bottle, less than a week later I went to finish another rod and it was set up like flexible, but solid and unusable.

They can't sell it any cheaper because those little bottles and the labels are eating up the profits. Just stop buying it and maybe they'll reformulate it to the specs of that other stuff.

Well,no damage done. At least I was able to see a problem before any attempt was made to use it on a rod. It's surprising that it is sold at all.

There is another product out there. I've had the same 1oz. bottle for 2 years. In the original bottle sitting upside down in a baby food jar with all my other stuff, still good as new. Lynn
