Hey Fellas..
I am looking to source unshaped cork stock.. Really just round unshaped cork in 1.25" DIA with a 3/8" or 1/2" center bore if possible.. Lengths with a minimum of 10" would be awesome but longer lengths are OK.. Anyone know of any supplier or vendor I may be able to use to source this? Re: Cork

try an internet search for "cork sticks" ... here's one result: [www.amstarcork.com] Be a little wary / choosy and check on the quality of the cork as most of it is normally a lower quality .. Re: Cork

There are two or three suppliers from Portugal that supply such pieces. Do a search and you will find them. Re: Cork

Cork is a tree bark and as a bark it is relatively thin - it varies from about 1/2 to 2" thick, then "rings" are punched out. To get a 10" long stick these rings are glued together. Therefore you can make you own 10" sticks by just gluing up some rings - it would be cheaper and faster then buying a pre-made 10" (although a little time consuming) and the pre-made sticks we have seen are not very good quality. I have never seen a cork stick that had high quality cork in it. Make your own out of cork rings. Re: Cork

there are tight regs. on cutting cork , after it is cut it will be a year before it is made into a unit that can be sold ,
not sure what you want, the better quality goes into rings for fishing rods, if you want rings with out holes try E bay , just look around , a little , William Sidney AK Re: Cork

Jeff,
Are you asking about a source for a one piece cork grip not built up from rings? Jeff, This probably is not the answer you're looking for but it would not be possible in the traditional sense because, and i'm really simplifying here, bark is stripped from the tree, laid flat and then the rings are cut/punched from the bark radially. The longest a ring can be is the thickest the bark grows which I think is a couple of inches. Now I'm just "spitballing" here and could be totally wrong, but if I recall correctly Cork 4U, a supplier to the left, has a ring they debuted at the last CRBE that is cut in a different orientation to how the tree grows. I'm not sure if it's cut from the bark vertically, horizontally, or at some other angle, but I don't think it's cut radially like regular rings are cut. I'm wondering if the bark could be cut in this new way to form lengths longer than the traditional 1/2" ring. The grain of the cork looks different, you can see a picture of it here: [customflygrips.com] The previous photo looks to me, and again I could be completely wrong here, to be very similar to the blocks sold by Cork 4U shown here: [www.alcatruz.pt] I'm thinking what you might be able to do is buy the block, bore the center on a lathe, and then mount it to a mandrel and turn it as one solid grip not built up from rings.
