G'day All
After some information if anybody has been using any tints or colours to add to there glue when putting cork rings together for grips.I am looking at highlighting the glue lines. Would prefer if I can get something locally rather than from overseas if possible. Has anyone had any problems with the glue breaking down or not bonding as well. Cheers in advance to any help Ray Balmforth Figtree NSW Australia Re: Glue Tints

This is a grip I did a while back that uses automotive gasket material between the rings that is readily available in Auto Parts stores. It's a thin line and comes in different colors. I like the look.
[www.rodbuilding.org] I'm guessing that if you put a color or tint into the epoxy or glue, by the time the handle has been turned down and sanded you may not see enough of it to get the affect you're looking for. You may see the line but not the color. Steve Hartzell Lake Conroe - Willis, Texas Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/11/2014 09:48AM by Steve Hartzell. Re: Glue Tints

Ray,
If you are using a wood white glue to glue the rings together, you can use common grocery store food coloring the glue. Basically, the same coloring that is used to color the frosting on a cake. If using an epoxy, you can use any of the many varieties of tint that are available for resin style glue. Be safe Re: Glue Tints

G'day Steve thanks for your reply.I have been using the gasket material for quite awhile and agree with you it is very good and gives a great contrast to the cork and burl.
And a very nice piece of work. What I am trying to achieve is a very fine line just barely visible I am not sure if I can achieve this. Roger thanks again for your help.I think what you are saying is the way to go.Just have to have a hunt around when I get back home.I saw something on a fly rod website But don't want to mention brands as they are not a sponsor. cheers Ray Balmforth Figtree NSW Australia Re: Glue Tints

If you look at Walker Nelson's facebook page, Nelson's custom rods, you'll see that he has used some stuff to accent glue lines in the past and it looked pretty sweet. It definitely gives the fine lines you're looking for. I just don't recall where he got the glue pigments. Jeremy Reed Reed Rods Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
