Hi,
I'm Logan. I'm new here and am just about to start my first build. I'm going with a cheap Fish Creek 9' 4wt 4pc fly blank, ring and cap reel seat, and single foot guides and I'm custom making my own cork handle. I have researched and read up on it a good bit, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how the ferrules work. Say I order a 4 pc blank, will I have to install ferrules on the ends of each section to be able to put it together or will it be able to go together as is without ferrules? I may not even be fully understanding what ferrules are or what there purpose is. Thanks, Logan Re: New builder and have a question

The ferrule is where the 2 or more pieces of the blank join together to form a complete rod or rod blank. Nearly all modern blanks have integral ferrules so you don't have to worry about installing them. They will either be a tip over butt design or a spigot design. Hope this helps you. The ferrules are part of the blank....nothing to install. Think of the ferrules as a reinforced female section at the end of one piece. The next lower section just slides into it. It is good practice to put a thread wrap over the ferrule to reinforce it (or install a guide there). Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: New builder and have a question

Generally, whether you need it or not, it is a good idea to put some wraps on the joint. This will help to prevent splitting of the joint in use. Normally a wrap that is 1/4 inch in width or so, is usually sufficient for suitable strength.
