is there any reason I should not use regular white pine for rod handles? I was going to coat it with tru oil or something like that so it would be protected. it seems light enough. Re: pine for wood handles?

No reason not to, as long as it is good and dry. Not very attractive, as little grain definition. Re: pine for wood handles?

Depends on what type up rod you are building. It won't hold up very well if it is going to be in and out of a rod holder a lot. It is also not a very attractive wood. Re: pine for wood handles?

You can color it and bring out some grain Tint some VERY thin clear Wipe it on Lightly Experiment light or several coats
After putting a coat on wipe it off or leave it Brings out some noce effects in the grain When you like the look Clear it Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/24/2014 09:07AM by bill boettcher. Re: pine for wood handles?

Pine is fairly soft and even a hard finish won't toughen it enough for use in something like a rod holder. Not knowing exactly what type of rod it's going on, all I could offer is that it may be fine or it may not be suitable for what you're wanting to do. It all depends on the rod type and how it will be used.
