old epoxy removal

Guys question for you. I'm fixing up a rod for a buddy. I'm replacing one guide. All the other guides are fine except the epoxy. Its yellow and cracked up. So I carefully removed the epoxy and left the wraps are in tact. The problem is the black wraps are a little yellow. Do I need to replace the wraps or will new epoxy cover and be ok. Please let me know.

Rather than removing the old epoxy, coat the finish with Permagloss. I have had sucess doing this one time. I don't have any idea how long It will last. The crackes did disapear and the yellow was gone.

John,
As long as you have it down this far, cut the guides off, get the blank completely clean, and rewrap the guides in the color of the choice of the client.

It only takes about an hour to strip and rewrap the rod, so spend the time and make it right.

Be safe

I agree with Roger,

You've probably already spent more time cleaning off the old epoxy that it would have taken to just start fresh with new thread.

Also, if you rewrap the rod, you can take this chance to update the rod with more current guides.
