Hi Guys.
I have just changed from Pacbay finish to Bullard. For some reason the last four rods I have varnished have a strange "smeared" effect on the epoxy.....can anybody shed any light on this? Mick Re: Smeared epoxy

Mick,
Are you referring to thread finish with a smeared look? What exactly do you mean - "smeared"? I assume that nothing has touched the epoxy as it has been curing has it? Be safe Re: Smeared epoxy

Bulalrd is Envirotex. Pretty sure it isn't really meant for exterior use although some get by with it. Wonder if that's what got messed up. Re: Smeared epoxy

Most likely amine blush, caused by a combination of CO2 and moisture.
If you'll set the rod in a very warm place, even in direct sunlight, for a few days it will tend to rectify itself. .............. Re: Smeared epoxy

Roger....It is really difficult to describe.....imagine you marbled the epoxy with an opaque varnish.....kind milky!
Neeless to say its driving me nuts!! I never had this with the Pacbay epoxy... When I run my finger over it... it leaves a watery residue on my skin almost like it has been sweating Re: Smeared epoxy

Tom
I think you might be onto something.....my workshop is most probably the dampest it has been in years, I ruled out reduced temperature as this is always an issue in Scotland!! I will varnish as normal upstairs with the central heating on where it is dry and see if I get the same reaction....for someone who builds rods for a living it has been a real pest!! Thank you for your help guys...I knew this was the forum to come to! Mick Re: Smeared epoxy

Mick,
I use Bullard finish, and it would blush on me regularly, about 50% of the time. I've found that it doesn't blush nearly as often when I warm the epoxy before I mix and hit it a bit with the alcohol lamp after the epoxy is in place. When it does blush, it will clear up in a few days. Joe Re: Smeared epoxy

Last year, a carpenter friend gave me about half a gallon of EnviroTex Lite, that was left over from a bar and table top top project, in a Pub, that he worked on.
Since then I have used it on more than a dozen rods with excellent results. I suspect that many of those expensive little bottles, sold as rod finish, have EnviroTex inside! Re: Smeared epoxy

No problems of any kind.
As Tom points out, two name brand rod finishes are actually relabeled EnviroTex. Re: Smeared epoxy
