Welcome Roger! I've been lurking here for a few months and am working on my first build. When buying factory rods, I got frustrated with the inconsistent "feel" of different brands of rods so I standardized on St Croix rods. In other words, a Cabelas Medium Fast, Shimano Medium Fast, St Croix Medium Fast all feel different. Now when someone asks for a recommendation, I know the feel of various St Croix actions (and SCII vs SCIII) so I can be confident I'm giving good advice. I also have rods a person can try so they determine exactly which action they like the best and get one of their own. Now if someone wants to try a HMX blank, I wouldn't feel as confident about what to suggest other than line and lure rating.
In the case of my first blank, I want a short crappie jigging rod so I'm getting a 2S60LF and cutting to length.

Btw, I catch way more crappies from docks with either a very long jig pole or cast a float & jig. :) Slower is better.

John S.
