I talked with a rod builder from England recently and he mentioned something they used in rod building called "dope." He said it is put on guide thread wraps before the finish is applied, and it causes the thread to tighten around the guide foot a little more than initially wrapped. Has anyone heard of this product and possibly used it? If so, is there any advantage? He said the term "dope" was a slang term and he did not know the proper name. Thanks.

I very much doubt if any one here in the U.K. uses "Dope" on their thread these days, that stuff was crap and if I remember correctly it was a nitrocellulose type of CP. Jersey, Channel Islands. (U.K.) Re: British Product for Tightening Threads

A solvent based coating might shrink silk thread but I do not think it would cause nylon or other synthetic threads to contract. Re: British Product for Tightening Threads

Phil, Gudebrod nitrocellulose CP did indeed cause the thread to contract, especially if you put a rod with it on the threads in a sunny window on a warm day. I know, I did it on a very UL rod trying to hurry the curing process, and about an hour later I heard a crack. I went to the window and the rod was crushed at the butt wrap. I learned my lesson!!! Remember
Thread holds the guides on the rod Any thing else put on is just to protect the threads from the eliments regular nylon thread can have two different colors With CP like it came off the spool Without it gets lighter and transparent Been posted here MANY MANY times Just stay here and read You will learn MUCH Bill - willierods.com Re: British Product for Tightening Threads

Another material that is called "dope" is the material that is used to finish cloth covered aircraft. As posted above, the "dope" causes the fabric to shrink and remove any loose fabric from the structure of the aircraft.
This material is still used for isolated cases of restoration aircraft. As also stated above, it is a nitro cellulose material that drys quickly and does and excellent job - to help finish aircraft. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
