I've searched for hand sanding the eva grip but I couldn't find anything. Anyone out here have any tips?

Art,
You likely have a drill.

Put the Eva on a rod that is build up to hold the Eva tight. Then, chuck the rod with the EVA on it into the drill.

Turn on the rod, and sand away.

You can drill a hole in a board that is nailed down to use for an end stabilizer for the rod. For a temporary setup it will work fine. It will work even better if you can have someone help you. Have someone hold the drill stable, while you are sanding the EVA.

You can always clamp down the drill, but if it is for only one piece, the temporary setup will work just fine.

Be safe

Arturo, you are looking to make a lathe of sorts with a drill motor. You will need a piece of metal shaft with a diameter that matches the EVA. You put the shaft in the drill, slide the EVA over it, rest the other end of the shaft in some type of support, squeeze the trigger and start sanding away. I find the "screen" type sandpaper (that they sell for drywall work) to do a good job. High speed works but don't let the EVA get hot/gummy.

If you have a drill ( poor mans lath )
Get a piece of scrap blank that fits the chuck of the drill
Fit the eva on it
Put into the drill
Brace the other end on some thing that will keep it from wondering
Turn on the drill and sand
I have a lath poor mans with a drill setup works well for even wood if I am carefull

With a drill press, imbed a 3/8 ID ball bearing into a board for a stabilizer (clamp the board to the drill press bed), chuck the rod into the drill press, and sand with very coarse sandpaper to start with. This is a very stable system that I've used for years on cork and polyurethane foam.

Does the shaft diameter have to be snugged to the EVA? If it does, won't it get stuck?

Thanks

Arturo,
Use a rod diameter that you like.
Then, use masking tape to build up the diameter of the rod, so that the EVA is a nice non slip fit on the rod.

You will always be able to pull off the EVA, if you can push it onto the rod.

Be safe
