I was looking at AMTK graphite with aluminum hoods

Can't speak for anyone else, but all of my heavy offshore rods (trolling) use aluminum butts - AFTCO, PacBay, etc. So the reel seat is integrated into the butt.

I've made some heavy jigging rods with aluminum reel seats, but 80 Class reels are really too heavy to jig with for any length of time...

I use all aluminum seats for anything that will use a large frame reel. These reels come with clamps that have ultra fine threads. I have seen more than one rod with the blank broken right underneath a graphite seat due to the reel clamps being tightened down too tight, crushing the blank under the seat.

What alum seats do you use i have seen them stated as for only up to 50 lb rods Thought they were strong and light ???

Last complete butt I used was WAY to heavy and was of aluminum
This is a boot rod 7 - 7 1/2 Yes Tuna 80 lb ?? Guy wants it long to move the fish around motors
Yes I know shorter rods give the fisherman the Advantage Not my rod

I'd consider pac bay's channel lock all aluminum seat.

I agree with Tony. I would opt for a heavy aluminum or chrome plated brass seat for this type of fishing.

Hello Bill.

For Big Stuff I use the Perfection Machined Aluminum Reel Seats (you can get a matching regular, ball, or swivel ball gimbal) or I will go with the big boy's (Aftco, American Tackle, Stuart, or Alutecnos)

If you want something for small tuna(10-40#) a Pac Bay channel lock 17 or 20mm I.D. SLIM (light) aluminum with nylon cushioned hoods.

Good Luck.

Bob,

New Bern, NC.

AFTCO #4 Aluminum Seat is plenty heavy enough for an 80# Class reel. Likewise, the PAC Bay or AmTAck #24 or #26 should do fine as well

Most of the 80 class reels are going to have a brace in addition to the reel clamp - you may want to check with your customer so that the brace is not rubbing the grip...

Hi Bill,
I found the Alps aluminium seats to be top notch and use them on most of my saltwater rods. After a number of years no sign of corrosion and plenty strong enough. I wouldn't be using a graphite seat on a rod like that.

No graphite...all aluminum...either the seat or unibutt.

For weight savings I typically use a nylon butt, aluminum seat, and Eva grip...aluminum gimbal.

When I don't use an Aftco unibut, I use either macjined aluminum or chrome plated brass. Both have stood the test of time.

You cant go wrong with Alps. Pretty much the main choice for most of the builders I know especially for all the long range big fish rods.
