I have a 9' 7wt Tiger Eye blank that has been sitting in my corner for some time now. Ive finally decided to build on it.
It will be built as a spinning rod for chasing fall run Michigan Kings. I have a set of MicroWave guides that I would like to try out on this rod. The reel of choice will either be a Pflueger Arbor 7430 or a Pflueger President 6940/4000 series reel. What would be the best way of setting up this guide train? Should the butt/stripper guide be a 30 then the MicroWave or just go with the MicroWave? thanks! Re: MicroWave with wide spool/big reel

If you don't use the Microwave guide as the butt guide, you're sort of defeating the whole purpose of that guide.
If you feel the current offering isn't going to be large enough, you might check with Swampland and see if they have any of the larger early Microwave guides. I believe those were available in a size 30. ............ Re: MicroWave with wide spool/big reel

I would get the 30/8 microwave from Swampland with anything from a Penn/daiwa 4000 up to 6000 in reel size.
No idea how big the reel diameter of your Pfluger is. But if you have all the components on hand, tape it up and see how you like the result. Cast it under an overhead neon light( like in a mall parking lots at night) and see what is happening, its like a strobe and also look what happens on the retrieve. You wont just be casting, you hopefully will also catch something. When you have a setup you like retest : on the retrieve tie on a hammer or similar heavy object , wind that in for 50 or so yards and see if you still like your layout. I have one mongrel setup with a doublefoot 40 Fuji K high frame series followed by a 30/8 microwave then a minima 7 m frame and minima 4 in 6mm fly to the tip on a 11 ft rod. Works well for me for sharks so far. Re: MicroWave with wide spool/big reel

You may be able to use the standard MicroWave guides, just go out a little farther from the reel face, try 25-27" out for the stripper.
Tape them up and try. Best wishes, Ron Schneider Schneider's Rod Shop Mountain Home, Arkansas [www.schneidersrods.com] mtnron40@yahoo.com 870-424-3381 Re: MicroWave with wide spool/big reel

Hi Cheng,
Ron is correct, I would use the smaller set for this rod. A fly blank is typically lighter (smaller) than heavier longer spinning rods that might be matched with larger guides. If your reel is large than you could start with the suggested placement for distance from the reel spool and move it further up the rod until it casts best without line slapping the blank. This set was tested on larger reels but since they have larger OD spools that can be longer as well. The line coils coming off the spool are larger so making the distance longer should help. Hope this helps. Darrin Heim American Tackle Company Re: MicroWave with wide spool/big reel
