"3D" Dec Wrap for a Fresh Water Rod

Haven't built a rod for many, many years and the new "3D" dec wraps are new to me and look very interesting - if not complicated. I have a Lamiglass steelhead blank with a diameter in front of the fore grip of .434/~11mm. Looked at Billy Vivona's incredible designs but he tells me the wraps like the 3D Iron Cross/Star, as done by Ken MacNeilly, were on a blank with a 22mm diameter. I can now see why - it takes a lot of threads to transition the colors from dark to light to bring about the dimensional effect, which require more diametrical space. So my question to the forum is - are there any 3D wraps that would look really good on a 11mm blank? (BTW, I plan to purchase Billy's book.) Or am I relegated to straight-forward diamonds, etc.? Not that diamonds aren't good looking, mind you. I've done some great thread work on diamonds. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can do that wrap on a smaller blank, but it will have less shades and less threads per color. SO if he used 6 or 8 of one color, you could use 3 or 4. Here is a 3D Star I put on an 8mm blank: [www.rodbuilding.org]

Billy, On the "Screwdriver Wrap," how many colors did you use? Madeira - do you separate individual threads from the yarn or use it straight off the spool? BTW, I have your book on the way to me. Looking forward to it!

You could also look at "3D" boxes.
