single foot for a tip top guide

Is there any special technique for wrapping on a single foot guide for use as a tip top guide? Since there is no free end beyond the guide I cannot get the hang of wrapping one one. I only have a hand wrapper and no way to support the rod beyond the tip top. Wondered if there was some trick I do not know about.

Nothing too special. You'll need an additional rest outside of your hand wrapper so the tip is hanging in the middle. You can wrap it with the standard thread carriage from your wrapper. You can also use a regular fly tying bobbin to wrap tips. Sometimes this is easier. Remember to use a locking wrap on the SF guide at the tip. There will be a little bit of tip top past the guide, depending on your security/locking wrap.

I started using SF guides for tip-tops several years ago because of the unavailability of small ringed (micro) guide tip-tops. It took a while to get used to the look of them and now I prefer them to conventional framed tip-tops. They are also considerably lighter and I think they look cleaner.
First thing that I do is make sure that the very tip of the blank is not rounded. If it is, I sand it square with the blank. While I prep the guide (Fuji TLSG3.5), I bend the guide slightly forward to provide an angle more conducive to the line flow. Then I use tape to hold the guide in position with the ring slightly forward of the tip (the tip never extends past the guide). Because the tip is so flexible, I manipulate/control the tip when rolling with both hands while wrapping (the other end of the blank is supported). I wrap the thread as close to the tip as possible so as not to have the tread slip off the blank (I never use a locking wrap). After aligning and applying finish, I apply a very small dollop of finish to form a “bridge” between the guide and the tip. This is best done after the finish begins to set and is slightly thicker to prevent wicking down to the wrap.

I posted a picture on the photo page (guide wraps).

I have used these single foot guides for tips on many rods. I grind the guide foot to ensure a smooth transition from the guides foot to the blank. Use a very thin strip of masking tape to hold the guide in place at the bottom of the foot and then wrap down form the guide ring to the blank, I have to have the guide facing to the right side as I am right handed. When you get close to the masking tape simply pull the tape off and continue down the blank, tie off loop install, complete the wrap and you are done. It may take some practise but it is easy once you get the hang of it..... Just another suggestion

As was posted earlier, the use a fly tying bobbin with the wrapping thread on the bobbin makes wrapping a flexible tip very easy.

Hold the tip with the guide taped to the tip. Then, use the thread bobbin in the other hand to quickly wrap the tip. You don't have to worry about tip flexibility since you can hold the tip an inch from the tip with your hand while the other hand quickly wraps the tip.

Be safe
