before applying the finish I want to remove all residue from masking tape and china markers. Is it safe to rub alcohol to remove china markers and tape residue Re: cleaning a blank before applying the finish on wraps

Hi Bill,
Any alcohol you use is likely to get on the thread and cause a problem with the finish. Distilled water on a tissue will get rid of the china marker but maybe not all the residue from masking tape. If the tape residue is not close to thread you might get away with it. I have used laboratory grade iso prophyl on the blank before applying finish and didn't have a problem, maybe I was lucky but it's not reommended. Anything, except distilled water, you use on a blank could contaminate the finish and cause a problem. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Re: cleaning a blank before applying the finish on wraps

Isopropyl is generally safe but do all you can to keep it off the thread. I wouldn't worry too much about contamination, but with all the various type threads in use these days there is not guarantee that you wouldn't upset the color dye or something such as that. Probably not, but just keep the alcohol away from anything other than the china marks or minor residue you have.

Bill,
Just use denatured alcohol. It will evaporate fast enough not to cause any problems even if does get on threads. Just let the rod sit for 5- 10 minutes before finish coating. Use a tack cloth and dab the thread wraps before applying finish coat. You purchase these at any auto supply store that sells waxing products or auto paint supplies. For stubborn marks or residue, quick evaporating brake cleaner works very well. Re: cleaning a blank before applying the finish on wraps

Number one!! don't use masking tape, use painters tape it leaves no residue. Number two! China markers are easily cleaned up with a water dampened Q-tip. I use the double tip type one end wet/damp, the other dry to follow the wet wipe. Re: cleaning a blank before applying the finish on wraps
