When a rod has tip size listed as 5.0, should I be ordering a 5.5 tube apparently? Frustrating to get the 5.0 tubes in for two rods and they don't fit... Maybe i should be ordering both sizes as maybe they vary sometimes?
Any thoughts on how you are ordering would be great. Thanks! Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

Buy one of the tip/top measureing gauges, measure the tip and order accordingly. I have never had a problem unless the dealer sent the wrong top. Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

I have the same issue in the past even with using the measuring gauge. I now order the "correct" size and one size bigger. Tip tops are not very expensive and it never hurts to have extras around. ______________________________________ Super Tight Lines......Don Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

Good advice all.
But, in addition, always look at the tip of the blank in question under a very bright light and a good magnifiier. Every now and then you might bet a blank that has an uneven trim on the tip. If so, you will sometimes find a ragged edge on the tip that requires a large tip size to accomodate the edge. If you do find this ragged tip, use an abrasive wheel to chop the ragged edge off leaving a clean tip behind. Never trimming more than 1/16th or 1/8th of an inch. But every now and then, if you trim off any ragged edge on the tip that the recommended size tip will then fit. Take care Roger Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

The tube of the tip can be enlarged slightly using the tine of a carving fork. Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

The blank specs are target specs. A great deal of hand labor is involved and the sizes we're talking about are very small. So very often the tiptop on any blank model will vary by 1/2 of a 64th, up or down.
Best to ask your dealer to fit one for you, or order extra sizes to accommodate the tip being larger or smaller. You shim a tiptop that's a hair too large, but best not to bother ordering one that might wind up too small. ................. Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke

i have the Pac bay tip top gage Works well and usually on target on tube sizes
i always scrap any finish off the tip with a razor blade This may help it to fit Bill - willierods.com Re: tip top sizing, order bigger or a fluke
