Hey guys:
I'm thinking of purchasing a custom that someone is selling that's in great condition. Only problem is it has tennesse grip with rings, that you have to tape down to hold in place. Is there an easy fix to install a skeleton fuji screw up grip and locking hoods? Or will I have to strip the butt cap and grip and start over? Or would I have to strip the guides and start from the top...which would make it not worth my money or time. Thanks Re: converting tennesse grip to skeleton with locking hoods

The easy way is to just put your reel on use the rings to hold it and tape it on
A lot of builders don't use any rings just tape This way the reel is adjustable so you can put it any where you want for comfort Bill - willierods.com Re: converting tennesse grip to skeleton with locking hoods

Tough to tell without a picture, but it sounds like if you want a regular nylon reel seat with locking hoods, you will have to remove the current Tennessee grip and rebuild from the back. Another option is to cut the grip and blank, build the new reel seat on a scrap of blank and re-assemble this together. Not sure how long the Tennessee grip is, but you could possibly make a short fore grip and a rear grip by just cutting and inserting the reel seat.
Another option is to wrap on a Fuji plate reel seat. This gives you a more positive reel lock and retains the current grip. Several options to consider. Let us know how it works out. Post a picture. Terry Re: converting tennesse grip to skeleton with locking hoods

there are so many companies that have quality blanks at nice prices
If you got to cut - strip - and rebuild this rod Unless it is REAL cheap just get another blank and build what you want Or strip it and rebuild it Bill - willierods.com Re: converting tennesse grip to skeleton with locking hoods

Sam,
Don't change a wonderful rod until you have fished with it. Get a roll of black electrical tape and keep it in your tackle box. When needed, tape the reel on the rod and go fishing. Very very light way to mount a reel and very very comfortable to use for fishing. Move the reel up and down the handle until the rod has the balance that you want for that particular rod.
