Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

Hello,
I am building freshwater rods again after a few years of mostly cod jig rods. I have a sb720-4 blank, that I am going to be fishing with a 1000 size daiwa spinning reel. The line is going to be 5 lb power pro. My tape up testing seems to show that I can get away with a 16mm stripper guide. I am thinking 16-10-7-4-4-4-4-4. The rod is like a feather with that little guide. Is it going to work? Thank you, Tim Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

Light braid typically allows you to use small rings - 16 should be adequate for 5 lb braid. Test it out! Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

Timothy,
I am just building a similar rod with similar line and reel. Tried using only the 16, but found that replacing the 16 with the 20 resulted in a better rod. Try it for yourself. Roger Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

I used a 16 on a RX7 783F and it worked fine. It is a high frame 16 though. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

I have used several #16 but stuck to M style without issue a lower guide was causing some issues. If you go lower try a 20 side by side, as the wieght is minimal. Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

Thanks for all the responses. In my test casting, the sixteen mm worked well, but I was using a small, dense lure. I have concerns about large, less dense lures not casting too well with this guide setup. The sixteen mm is great, but under actual fishing conditions, the setup is so light in hand that a 20 mm ring is not going to make much of a difference. I am going to go and order a size 20 ring, and try 20-12-8-4-4-4-4-4. I feel that if the rod was a 3 or 4 power and I was using a dropshot rig with a 1/2 ounce sinker, the 16 mm would work fine.

All my light rods and under have Minima 4 match frame 16/8/5 then fly frame size 3 to tip.
Nô issue and so light. ________________________________________ @+ Eric [www.emfishing.fr] Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

Timothy,
I use a high frame 12mm butt guide and 3.5’s for runners on all my spinning rods. I typically use 1000 size reels and 12# braid. If you’d like a copy of my test results, email me. Re: Can I get away with a 16mm guide?

I believe that with 5 lbs braid, you can even go down to size 12 guide - as long as you are using guides that are tall enough for the angle to be appropriate.
Also, maxima size 16 is more like a size 20 in regular oxide or SIC guides in terms of inner diameter. Mo Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
