Hi all. It has been more than a year since I have built a rod. I am not so rusty about the norms but hubby wants some roller guides on this one. We are looking to build a stand-up, jig-tossing rod for his 40# rig on 5-10 day trips out of San Diego. We also want to use it for trolling when we finally get our tackle together and fish come in close again (hopefully next year) for albacore in the central/northern California waters (HMB and San Fran).
I would like your opinion on the Calstar GF765M (I have the GF765L that I use in San Diego). My thoughts are to put a roller as the first guide and a roller at the tip. I don’t think I need to use rollers for all of the guides (?). Are there different *rules* for placing rollers or can I use the same placement techniques? Do particular styles/brands of rollers lend themselves to this style of rod? I thank you very much for your thoughts. Sandra Re: Roller guides

Placing rollers and or ringed guides use the same logic, keeping the line off the rod while under load with the least amount of guides. Personally I would use all ringed guides as the rollers will hinder jig tossing a bit but using this as a troller also I understand the reasoning. All my longrange 100# and 130# tuna rods are with ringed guides now. Either way will work for you that is why we call this custom rod building.
