nylon cord grips

Happy new year all.
I just completed my first nylon cord grip on my surf rod; with some turks heads to accentuate it.
what sort of substance should I use to coat and protect the cord. Keep in mind, this rod spends a lot of its time in the water being used as a walking stick while crawling out to the rocks at Montauk; got to be tough.
I would hate to see a nice cord grip go to waste after one or two fishing trips.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Mike

I'd put two coats of PermaGloss on it and then use it for the rest of your life.

I use polyeurothane by Minwax. Never had any come back and it wears like iron.

I'll second the MInwax Helmsman urethane. They do, in fact, wear like iron. I use them on just about every surf rod I build.

Permaglos will be clear, and you will have less working time. The urethane will give your grip an amber tint, if that is an issue for your grip color. I've used both and they work really well for what you describe.

I made a spear, yes, i know this is a rod building site, years ago. I also made a couple of gaffs and both of them I wrapped with nylon cord. I then thoroughly saturated them with Perma Gloss. Then gave them a second coat. They look just as good today as they did the day I made them, and are just as strong. All of them have been used many times and Perma Gloss wears like iron or better. Don't ask what the spear is for!!
