The wooden bead holds the elastic hair band. It looks exactly like Barry's picture except that beads are used instead of those black and white barrels. See his pictures or I can post one. It's the same thing though. David Dosser Coshocton, OH Re: Guide placement tape

It looks like the previous suggestions are converging. The next step is to eliminate the multiple sizes of wooden beads and elastic hair bands and just use elastic sewing thread (~ size A when stretched) and reef knots or whip finishes in a tiny fragment of thread, which may be cut and discarded once wraps secure the guide. It's faster easier than maintaining an inventory of various sized wooden beads and hair elastics and threading them up and down the length of the blank. Re: Guide placement tape

Phil, I like the idea of the elastic thread. The hair bands and beads are actually very easy to use and can be taken off without threading them up and down the rod. You loop it over, push the bead through the loop and tighten. When ready to pull off, you pull down on the bead, push the bead back through the loop and put it aside. I keep mine in a small plastic tub and only use one size. It is sort of like a half-hitch. Very simple. I made 12 of them and have been using the same ones for the last 2 years.
I have some elastic thread and will give it a try. It is hard to switch to another method sometimes when you are used to using one that works for you. I wanted something that would work with micros, allow for static testing and casting, and hold the guide securely while wrapping. I just happened to run across the idea a few years ago on the net and decided to make some. I am not against any method and think that everyone has great ideas. I'm always looking for something that makes things easier. Thank you for the elastic thread idea. I will definitely try it.
