When building a spiral wrapped rod intended for any sort of heavy trolling application, I'm apt to use more than one style guide, hopefully in the same frame color, of course. I might start with a heavy braced frame on top, a braced but lighter frame for a bumper guide (simple spiral style) perhaps one more heavy braced guide underneath, and then switch to lightweight, lower framed braced guides for the remainder. Most of the load on the guides will take place on the bottom half or third of the rod so there isn't much need to use extremely heavy guides on the upper half. Not to mention that the guides along the underside won't be carrying much if any side load.

If you do a little reading on the Angler's Resource site, you'll see that RB's are only offered in Size 20 and 25, and are used exclusively in the butt section of the rod.
HN's would be my choice for this, even though you could use the HB's successfully as well. I've spiraled HB's on sailfish rods with good success so no reason why you couldn't use these in your wire line configuration. Both are available in either SIN or SIC inserts which will hold up for wire line trolling. Terry Re: Help with guides on a saltwater trolling blank

John, First off let me say that wire is nowhere near that of braid or mono so a straight line path is more or less the rule when it comes to trolling with that in use.
Second, if #8 guides will pass your leader/ swivel connections then thats not a problem. Third, I'm a fan of using roller guides with wire at the butt and tip/top. And finially ,"A two piece sprial wrapped wire line rod" ? Where will the transition guide be on the two sections ? Dennis J.
