Looking to replace a single foot guide on an older berkly rod. The ring popped out so it needs to be replaced. What exactly what I measure in order to order a suitable replacement????
thanks Re: how to measure guides for replacement

Ceramic guides still measure to the diameter of the metal frame of the ring. That is: the ceramic insert has a smaller inside diameter based on the thickness of the insert. Re: how to measure guides for replacement

Ken is correct.
But to help myself, I have made a few different tapered sticks of different sizes to be able to insert into a rod guide to determine the size. Essentially, these tapered sticks are identical to ring sizers that are used by Jewelers to determine ring size. You can just take a bunch of tapered sticks - I use old handles from paint brushes that have a nice long taper. Then I will take a bunch of guides and slip them on the tapered sticks and make my own calibration sticks for various guides. I have even gone so far as to take the tapered sticks to a sporting goods store to measure the sizes of guides used by various manufacturers. Basically a mark on a stick of a particular taper will represent a particular guide type and size. With some manufacturers, the guide sizes tend to be somewhat muddled from what a person might assume. So, to be sure, I just measure them first. Then, anytime that I need to double check a guide, I simply insert the taper into a guide and quickly determine the exact guide under consideration. In a lot of cases, it is not that important, but it is nice to be able to verify a size exactly. Sure, a person can use a caliper, but the tapered sticks are very quick and easy to use. Great idea Rooger. It is simple and no reason it should not work great. I am surprised someone hasn't come up with something on the market like that....Great project for this afternoon...
