Rod & Wrap finishes

I am currently building my first graphite fly rod. I notice that most builders of graphite use commercial 2 part epoxy finishes on their wraps, often high build. As a long time bamboo rod maker I have become used to using a spar or a urethane varnish on my wraps.
Since these materials or something close is used to refinish a rod (or as the original finish), doe anyone use spar or urethane to coat their wraps? What would be the negatives to doing this? Thank you in advance for any helpful response. Richard Steinbach Re: Rod & Wrap finishes

You would be far better off using Perma gloss, even on your bamboo rods. Will last 10 times as long, doesn't discolor, and remains flexible for the life of the rod. Re: Rod & Wrap finishes

The difference is mostly in appearance. Varnishes tend not to cover the wraps as thoroughly unless you use a large number of coats.
I build only fly rods, and my customers do not like the individual threads to show. They also do not like CP used as they like the wraps to blend more with the blank. Re: Rod & Wrap finishes

I have found the same as Phil. I build only fly rods (a few spinners and casters for friends) and use the lite finishes with multiple coats. The varnishes and uries seem to darken to much for my liking and seem to "crack" in time.

I don't think there are any real negatives to using something like a urethane, other than it may take multiple coats to build any depth, if you're wanting to achieve any depth. Other than that many urethanes make excellent thread wrap coatings.
