I have a Lamiglas, factory built fly rod. The uplocking ring is damaged and needs to be replaced.
Is there a safe way to remove the butt cap? Thanks for your input. Craig Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

What type of butt cap is it, Metal, Aluminum, Nickle silver? On wood, cork, metal? I would first try using an alcohol lamp to heat gently, and then use a cushioned pair of pliers to remove it. Will the uplocking ring slip past the end of the real seat.? Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

Looks like nickel silver threads and cap. Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

Remove the end cap. Heat may do it. Spin the ring off and replace the hood. You might have trouble finding a hood alone, but ask around enough and somebody will have one. You'll have to supply the seat brand type and/or the ID of the hood.

If that end cap is just glued or epoxied in place it shouldn't be difficult to remove. a little judicious heat will probably do the trick. Some were affixed at the facotry that made the reel seat, and while it may be more difficult, requiring a little more heat time, it should still be do-able. Just be aware that the threaded portion of the seat may slip off the wood insert while trying to remove just that little end cap due to heat loosening the glue holding it in place. From the odds and ends I picked up from a retiring rod builder I have dozens of loose rings so I expect I can find a matching ring for this reel seat.
Another rod builder suggested an ice-cold wet towel on the threads while I heat the cap to keep the heat localized. If Lamiglas won't offer to replace it, I will give heat and padded pliers a shot. I have dealt with Lamiglas for years, and they are very good about repairs and/or replacements. Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

Lamiglas is a great company.
I expect that they will at least send me the part, if not offer a repair. If not, with all of your advice, I think I'll be able to manage this. Craig Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/26/2012 05:29PM by Craig Strong. Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

I heard back from Kendra at Lamiglas.
They'll send me the part for free or fix it for $20 including return shipping. Thank you all for your input. Craig Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

if the butt cap is epoxyed on use a heat gun and padded pliers, i just did the to remove the the front hood of a reel seat to machine the slot bigger so the reel will fit Re: Damaged reel seat, how to replace uplocking ring

It's epoxied on.
Will use a heat gun and padded pliers. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
