Using about 110 grit paper, a sander has just a tad less tendency to overheat the guide foot. Of course, you have to use good technique whichever you choose.

Ridge,
I have found a Dremel tool with a 425 Emery Impregnated Disc works great for prepping all guide feet. Easy to use and control, whether it is a large guide or a micro guide. Don Campbell don@sensorfishingrods.com Re: which should i use?

I use a Dremel and keep it in a Dremel Vise on my bench. It works great.

I have tried all of the items mentiolned above.
But my preference by many times over is the use of the 1X30 inch belt sander with about 220 grit paper on the sander. About 5 seconds per guide to ready for wrapping. Roger Re: which should i use?

Either method works great. I use the 3 1/2" bench grinder at the end of my wrapping bench. The grinder has 2 wheels, one for shaping and a fibre wheel f (or unified wheel from Bingham) for polishing. You do have to use good technique to prevent over grinding and heating up the guide foot but you end the process with a perfectly finished guide. These can be had at Harbor freight for $40. These include a hand held grinder pick-off as well.

Terry,
You mention over heating the guide foot. Is there a problem if you heat the guide foot? What happens to the guide foot if you turn it cherry red? Is something changing on the guide foot that one needs to be concerned with. As an experiment, I used a grinder to heat the entire guide foot cherry red. Then, I let it cool. I really found no differeces in the stiffness of the foot, or the ductility of the foot. Is there something else that one should be concerned about that I didn't test for? Just wondering. I normally don't heat the guide feet a great deal when prepping, but just wondered why heating at all would be of a concern. Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
