I'm building a single rod and I really don't want to spend the money to buy a rod dryer/wrapper. Is it necessary to get one of these for when I finish the wraps or can it be successfully done without one? Re: Rod Turning Necessary?

Max,
If you like, I have a spare dryer motor that I could send to you if you like. Just drop me an e-mail for your address. Hflier@comcast.net Roger Re: Rod Turning Necessary?

Jim gave you a good article to reference.
A bit ago I had my dryer motor break at the wrong time. I was in panic mode as I had five rods I had to get done. I remembered what Tom had said about always turning by hand. It went a lot faster and easier then I envisioned. Not going to swear to it, especially after the spending the money for a new dryer setup, but I do think the results were superior. Follow the article and you will be okay. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Rod Turning Necessary?

This method will work well. I did it for years before buying a motor. Make sure that the 2 supports are level. After finish is applied start with the guides up or down, Time 5 minutes and rotate 180 ---do the same for 1 hour. the 2nd hour 10 min. Then leave it alone. Should have a nice finish. 2nd coat if needed Re: Rod Turning Necessary?

Bill is right on track. Ensure that you have the rod level. I measure to the center of the blank at each support and shim as required. I've not done the number of rods that many here have done but ALL of mine have been turned by hand and I have had GREAT results. Just make sure that you don't put on an excessive amount of finish (easier to add a second coat vice trying to repair the first). Follow Bills suggeston for turning and you will be spot on! Max,
The dryer went out this morning. You will have it in a couple of days. Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
